“For a day in YOUR courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my GOD than dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
— Psalms 84:10 NKJV
One undeniable truth about the human experience is our innate desire for happiness. We pursue joy through various activities and experiences, each person finding delight in their unique interests. Happiness is indeed relative and deeply personal; however, there is a universal longing for something good—a fulfilling experience that uplifts our spirits.
Traveling is a common pursuit among people, whether it’s visiting loved ones, commuting to work, or embarking on vacations. We often seek out the best experiences, gravitating towards places and people that bring us joy. I fondly recall my childhood visits to family, where good food, laughter, and even gifts awaited me. Similarly, in our professional lives, we aspire to associate with esteemed organizations that foster a sense of accomplishment, regardless of our positions.Dubai, for instance, emerged as a coveted vacation destination, captivating travelers with its stunning landscapes and luxurious offerings. Everyone seemed eager to experience the happiness that such places promised.
King David was immensely wealthy and blessed by the LORD. He had access to all the pleasures of his time—yet he recognized that true joy transcends material wealth and worldly experiences. He expressed this beautifully when he said:
“YOU will show me the path of life; In YOUR presence is fullness of joy; At YOUR right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
— Psalms 16:11 NKJV
David understood that despite having traveled extensively and indulged in many pleasures, nothing compared to the joy found in GOD’s presence.
In today’s world, seeking happiness often comes at a price. For example, visiting luxurious destinations like Dubai requires financial resources. Our desire may lead us to compromise our values in pursuit of fleeting joy. In contrast, joy in GOD is freely given nd always available to you; it flourishes simply by being in HIS presence and has lasting effects. Moses spent time with GOD and returned with a radiant face—a testament to the transformative power of divine communion.
What the world holds in high esteem can often be deceptive. David chose to relinquish his royal position and its accompanying benefits to be a doorkeeper in GOD’s house because he recognized that GOD embodies goodness itself. While companies may offer end-of-year bonuses, such rewards are temporary; GOD’s goodness is everlasting and fills our whole year.
“You crown the year with YOUR goodness, And YOUR paths drip with abundance.”
— Psalms 65:11 NKJV
The Passion Translation emphasizes that it is far better to be in GOD’s presence than among the beautiful tents of wickedness. The world may appear inviting, yet it is rife with deception and evil. Many have ventured into its allure only to find danger; however, in GOD there is life—life eternal—and everlasting joy.
When David declared it better to be in GOD’s presence, he meant it as a profound truth: it is more beautiful, prosperous, and precious than any worldly pleasure. If you seek true joy, look no further than the presence of GOD.
Heavenly Father,
I am grateful for YOUR PRESENCE and the true joy I experience from being with YOU! May I continually find joy in YOU and may YOU continually be the source of my joy. I am grateful for the opportunity to be with YOU daily!
