I don’t depend on my own strength to accomplish this; however I do have one compelling focus: I forget all of the past as I fasten my heart to the future instead.
- Philippians 3:13 TPT
When we consider the past, we see both the good and the bad, the successes and what may seem like failures. I refer to them as "apparent failures" because, as Christians, we understand that what we perceive as setbacks can often be setups for witnessing GOD's mighty hand at work in our lives. Indeed, all things work together for good for those who love GOD and are called according to His purpose.
The positive experiences in our lives tend to bolster our confidence and provide encouragement or pride. Conversely, the negative experiences can diminish our hope and make us hesitant to move forward. However, what we often label as "bad" can also be the very reason we continue to push ahead. As Christians, we recognize that walking with GOD is the pathway to victory. Regardless of our circumstances, we must cling to GOD and trust Him to help us remain steadfast through every season.
The Apostle Paul was a remarkably successful preacher and teacher who excelled in ministry. Yet, he faced significant opposition and life-threatening challenges. In the midst of these trials, it would have been easy for him to dwell on his achievements or succumb to despair over his difficulties. However, in today’s scripture, Paul teaches us an important lesson: whether our past is filled with triumphs or challenges, we must forget what lies behind and press on toward the future. He understood that being trapped by past events would hinder his progress. By doing so, he acknowledged that the future holds far greater possibilities than anything he had experienced before.
The Bible frequently emphasizes that what lies ahead is greater than what has come before. For instance, it tells us that the latter glory will surpass the former (Haggai 2:9), and that the sufferings of this present time cannot compare to the glory that will be revealed (Romans 8:18). The Old Testament was succeeded by a New Covenant that offers life, grace, and faith in JESUS CHRIST (Hebrews 8:6).
What has been your story? What experiences do you consider good or bad? When reflecting on positive moments, we often fall into the trap of believing we achieved them solely by our own efforts. However, Paul reminds us that any good in our lives is a result of GOD working through us—strengthening and empowering us to achieve great things. Have you acknowledged GOD in your greatest accomplishments? Have you taken a moment to recognize that it was His hand that made it all possible?
As you contemplate your past—whether it has been filled with joy or sorrow—today’s charge is clear: look forward to what lies ahead. When you feel there is nothing more you can do, go on your knees and ask GOD, "What’s next, LORD?"
When walking along a path, if you hear a sound behind you and turn to look back, what happens? Often, you may find yourself tripping or losing your balance. I can certainly relate; I’ve experienced this myself. Recently, I faced some fears, and the HOLY SPIRIT reminded me: “You don’t make progress by looking back or considering the clutter and noise; you move forward by focusing on what lies ahead.”
Whether your past has been good or challenging, remember that today is an opportunity to look forward with hope and anticipation. Embrace this moment and seek GOD's guidance for your next steps.
Dear Heavenly FATHER,
I thank you for my life and all that you have done for me. I am grateful for the good and the bad. Today, I ask for the GRACE to look forward. Forgetting what is behind so I can behold the greater future YOU have planned for me. In JESUS mighty name.
