So why would I fear the future? Only goodness and tender love pursue me all the days of my life. Then afterward, when my life is through, I’ll return to your glorious presence to be forever with you! Psalms 23:6 TPT
As humans, we naturally seek certainty about the future. We plan and take every possible step to ensure that our lives are predictable and aligned with our desires. Uncertainty, on the other hand, often breeds fear, anxiety, and worry.
Psalm 23 is a well-loved passage that beautifully illustrates what happens when we allow God to be our shepherd. In this psalm, we recognize that God leads us to peaceful and nourishing places. Even in dark times, He continues to guide us. Importantly, God does not abandon us when challenges arise; He is sovereign over all things, and nothing is too difficult for Him.
Reflecting on his own journey through peace and sorrow—through life’s inevitable ups and downs—David concludes that, despite all he faces, he is convinced that because God is with him, only goodness and mercy will follow him. This assurance extends beyond this life; even in death, he will return to a glorious place in the presence of the Father. God's goodness is not limited to times of prosperity; it shines through even in adversity. In essence, God's unwavering goodness will be evident during tough times as well.
I can personally attest to this truth, as can many Christians. In the midst of hardships, I have experienced God's favor—like discovering pools of fresh and clean water in the desert.
David was confident that with the Lord as his shepherd, his journey would end well. The same holds true for us because we have made God our Father.
Other translations of Psalm 23 offer a more assertive conclusion: "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." (Psalm 23:6 KJV)
The word "surely" conveys a sense of undeniable assurance and confidence that God's goodness and mercy will follow you throughout your life. This promise is not just for the present but encompasses all your days, culminating in the blessing of dwelling in His house.
Many people may not realize that dwelling in God's house is a profound blessing. It signifies residing in His secret place, where no evil can approach (Psalm 91). Psalm 65:4 tells us that those who draw near to God are blessed and filled with His goodness.
With God on your side—the source of all good and perfect things—you are destined to thrive regardless of the challenges you face. We see this truth exemplified in the lives of Joseph, Daniel, and David; despite their trials, they experienced God's goodness. You too will continually encounter His goodness and experience an upward journey in life.
I am persuaded that GOD’s goodness and mercies will pursue me all the days of my life and even into eternity. Praise the LORD!
