Rebuilding the Future: The Sapeliga Community School Kindergarten Project
Since 1930, the Sapeliga Community School has been a cornerstone of education in Ghana’s
Upper East Region. As the main district school, it has served thousands of students across
more than 20 surrounding districts—shaping lives and empowering communities through
learning.
But today, this legacy is at risk.
After decades of use without major rehabilitation, the school’s infrastructure has deteriorated to
dangerous levels. The original 1930s building is now structurally compromised and poses a
serious threat to all who use it. Students can no longer study in safe classrooms, leading to a
sharp decline in school attendance. Many parents are afraid to send their children to
school—and tragically, many of the students themselves have lost interest in education,
disheartened by the harsh and unsafe learning conditions.
In response to this urgent need, we are launching a new chapter for Sapeliga: the construction
of a brand-new kindergarten complex. The current kindergarten block, serving over 200
young children, is the most vulnerable and in dire need of immediate attention. Rather than
renovating what can no longer be salvaged, we are building a safe, modern, child-friendly
learning environment from the ground up.
This project is the first phase in a broader plan to revitalize the school and restore the spirit of
learning in Sapeliga. With determination and collective support, we aim to complete
construction by November 2025 —just in time to welcome a new academic year in a new,
dignified space.
Current Challenges Faced By Sapeliga School
1. Infrastructure
Renovation Needs: The current school buildings are in a poor state, with
significant structural weaknesses. The KG classes, in particular, are held
in a 1930 building that is at risk of collapse due to its deteriorating
condition. The original KG classes were destroyed by winds, with the
roof destroyed and the entire facility in disrepair.
Small Room Sizes: The classrooms are too small to accommodate the
number of students, leading to overcrowding and an unfavorable
learning environment.
Pupil to Desk Ratio: There is a shortage of desks and chairs, forcing
many students to sit on the floor or share limited seating, which
hampers their ability to focus and learn effectively.
2. Furniture and Equipment
Furniture Shortages: There is a critical need for desks, chairs, and other
essential furniture to ensure that all students have a comfortable and
conducive learning environment.
KG Materials and Equipment: The kindergarten classes lack essential
materials and equipment for indoor and outdoor learning, such as toys,
building blocks (legos), balls, merry-go-rounds, and skipping ropes.
3. Teaching and Learning Materials
Textbooks and Stationery: There is a shortage of textbooks,
cardboards, and other stationery items necessary for teaching and
learning.
Uniforms and Shoes: Many students lack proper uniforms and shoes,
which can affect their self-esteem and overall participation in school
activities.
Proposed Solution
Infrastructure Renovation
New KG Block: Construct a new, safe, and well-ventilated KG block to
replace the current hazardous building.
Renovation of Other Classrooms: Renovate and expand existing
classrooms for primary and junior high school levels to reduce
overcrowding and improve structural integrity.
Furniture and Equipment
Desks and Chairs: Provide new desks and chairs to improve the pupil to
desk ratio across all classes.
KG Materials and Equipment: Supply essential materials and equipment
for indoor and outdoor learning in the kindergarten classes.
Modern School Library
Library Construction/Renovation: Construct or renovate a modern
school library with adequate space, shelving, and seating.
Library Resources: Procure relevant books, journals, and digital
resources to support the curriculum.
Teaching and Learning Materials
Textbooks and Stationery: Procure textbooks, cardboards, and other
stationery items for all levels of education.
Uniforms and Shoes: Provide uniforms and shoes for students in need
across all levels.
